Lactase enzyme

Lactase is a natural enzyme produced in the small intestine. It plays a fundamental role in lactose hydrolysis process; it divides the sugar that can be found in the milk into two components: glucose and galactose, as they may be absorbed by the body during the digestive process.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN ALL LACTOSE IS NOT DIGESTED?

  • During the first months of life some babies have difficulty digesting lactose milk
  • because part of it is not hydrolysed. This situation, which is relatively common and
  • transient, usually occurs in the first 4 months of life and is associated to a low
  • endogenous lactase production, causing that part of the lactose ingested in each meal
  • is not hydrolysed.
  • This unhydrolysed lactose not will suffer the action of intestinal bacteria entering in a
  • fermentation process that leads to a production and accumulation of gas followed by
  • episodes of acid diarrhea. During this process the baby has Infant colic , bloating, pain and
  • discomfort with prolonged periods of crying.

WHAT TO DO IN THIS SITUATION?

  • A recommended solution to solve this situation is to use a lactase supplement in order to enhance the enzymatic action on lactose. An increased enzymatic action on lactose facilitate milk digestion reducing the discomfort feeling and consequent episodes of inconsolable crying.
  • *Scientific studies have shown that babies fed with milk treated with lactase enzyme shows a considerable reduction in the duration of crying and this result is attributed to an improvement of the digestive process of milk.

WHEN SHOULD Easycol BABY+® BE USED ?

  • Easycol BABY+® is a safe product and can be used from the first day of life. The discomfort associated to a poor digestion of lactose usually disappears in a natural way after 4 months of age, because the body develops a greater capacity to produce
  • endogenous lactase. At this period begins the first introduction of semi-solid foods in the baby’s diet (porridges and soups). From this point it’s possible to reduce gradually
  • the use of Easycol BABY+®. However, if after reducing the use of Easycol BABY+® the discomfort reappear, it is recommended to administer the same dose taking before starting the gradual reduction.
